Mysteries - Mediterranean Grave

12 million people take a cruise each year.
Most have fun.
Some die.
Henry Grave investigates.

Mediterranean Grave

Henry Grave is a senior investigator for the Association of Cruising Vessel Operators.  A World War II P.O.W., Henry is as cunning as he is charming, and at 84 years of age, he fits right in with his fellow passengers.  The cruising yacht Vesper is anchored off the Greek island of Thera, in the caldera of an ancient volcano, as Henry comes onboard.  An Egyptian federal agent was onboard to guard a valuable Minoan cup, but the agent was murdered and the cup, stolen.  With the help of a Nicaraguan soap opera star, a New Age spiritualist, and a blind pickpocket, Henry draws  on skills honed in a Nazi prison camp to track down a killer who might have his own reasons for taking this particular cruise, reasons unrelated to the sumptuous meals, delightful shipboard activities, and exciting ports of call.

Mediterranean Grave is a murder mystery set on a rundown cruise ship that is currently catering to the New Age set. Doonan's novel blends both humor and suspense to create the perfect easy, warm afternoon read.   - Diane Gross-Hagerty, Sacramento Books Examiner 9/21/11

"In William Doonan’s second book in the Grave series, Mediterranean Grave, he has Henry Grave lead us on another murder mystery adventure on the high seas with some Greek mythology mixed in. Henry is a crotchety old man who’s rough, gruff, and very funny. Doonan has written this book as though you are Henry Grave, an excellent ploy that draws the reader into the character.

Henry is called to investigate a murder mystery aboard a themed yoga/personal healing cruise. Henry, being older then old school, has no need for this stuff, but has a little fun with it along the way.  Once onboard the old, rickety, barely running, and grossly understaffed cruise ship, Henry begins investigating what turns out to be a couple of murders and the theft of a valuable missing cup that had been sitting at the bottom of the ocean for thousands of years. Doonan takes the reader to some exotic places and offers an education of these places along the way to a very surprising and pleasing end.

Doonan’s crisp and descriptive writing style makes this a very entertaining and engaging read. This is the best combination of a murder mystery and humor that I have ever read. Based on the first book, Grave Passage, I had high expectations for Mediterranean Grave and my expectations were met and surpassed."   - Marc Filippelli, San Francisco Book Review 7/14/11
